Thursday Pick me up :: Gift of Water

Hey Gang,

After the devastation in Haiti it really got me thinking one how fortunate I am that my parents brought us to Canada.  How blessed my children are to be living in such a wonderful country, even with the cold winters! *wink*.  For any of you that dont know Im running a raffle to help raise money for the people in Haiti you can find more info here.  I want to thank everyone for the amazing response we have received so far, please keep it coming and tell all your family and friends.

Some of you may be thinking how far can my $20 go?  We'll I'll match that $20 then our government will match that therefore your $20 is not worth $80, to put it into perspective were talking about almost 4 months salary for a Haitian worker.  For all of you that have donated elsewhere thats fantastic, they truly need our help.   For anyone else wanting to know what more than can do or for some of you still on the fence here's a Video to show you how far your $20 (a night at the movies) can go.

Me and my Leica :: Day Three

Hey Gang,

Just having more fun with the new addition to our camera family!  So Ive been getting a ton of emails wondering whats so special about the leica?  Is it easier to use? does it take better photos? is it for everyone?  Well let me answer NO, NO and YESSSSS.  Its not your standard point in shoot camera nor your advance auto everything SLR.  Its a camera that really makes you slow down and think about the shot which is great for a happy-finger-trigger-shooter like myself! *LOL*.  The thing I love MOST about the camera is that I have it with me all the time.  Here are some shots from this past weekend while Lez was away with the girls Purse shopping.  I have to say that I have quite the collection of "man-purses" (camera bags) myself so I can definitely appreciate it! *wink*

We met up with my brother and his family for lunch and I caught Melissa and Kennedy rocking out.  Melissa was so impressed that Kennedy knew all the lyrics to "Will you be my girl" *lol*

Even though Ive been on a diet...oops I mean life-style change *wink* you have to treat yourself every once in a while! So I took the kids to a new pastry place that I was dying to check out Nova Era located on King Street in Kitchener near the Farmers Market.  SOOOOO GOOOD!!

And just like usual Kennedy gets knocked out with a full stomach just like her dad! *wink*

Hey Gang,

Happy Monday to all of you! But to our brothers and sisters in Haiti its not happy.  It breaks my heart to see the suffering in Haiti, but what can we do?  That's what I asked myself.  Being a husband and father of two wont allow me to physically go there to help and I probably dont have the experience and skills they require.  What I do best is take photos and capture moments.  I've decided to put together a raffle for the month of February to help raise funds for the Canadian Red Cross.  The Raffle is for a free portrait session by me, you can use it for an e-session, family portrait life-style session, you and your pet, maternity session, baby session or a high-glam studio session.  All the funds ABSOLUTELY ALL THE FUNDS will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross.  On top of all that {BASSEM} will match a donation from all the money raised through the raffle up to $500.   Please tell all your family and friends They need our help!  Here are the details.

Value of the portrait session: $500

Duration of raffle: Month of February 2010

Cost of ticket: $20

Your more than welcome to purchase more than one ticket! *wink*

Method of payment: Paypal (my email info@bassem.ca) (please include your name and phone number and email in the comments section)

If you want to mail a cheque please contact me.  Please make all cheques to the Canadian Red Cross on the memo line please write:  Haiti 2010 Earthquake relief

On February 28th we will announce the winner!

Here are some examples of what you can use your portrait session for.

Photo-Tip-Fridays :: Lesson 4

Hey Gang,

I know its been forever since my last photo-tip-Friday. I have a little confession, I've been enjoying my Fridays off! *wink*.  For this lesson I want to talk about shutter speed and its relation to your photos.  This is the definition I got off the net:

"Shutter speed, or more literally exposure time, is measured in seconds, but often marked in reciprocal seconds. A typical exposure time for photographs taken in sunlight is 1/125th of a second, typically marked as 125 on a shutter speed setting dial. In addition to its effect on exposure, shutter speed changes the way movement appears in the picture. Very short shutter speeds are used to freeze fast-moving subjects, for example at sporting events. Very long shutter speeds are used to intentionally blur a moving subject for artistic effect. "

Basically to freeze action use a fast shutter speed or if you want to show motion in your photos use a slower shutter speed.  I do suggest mounting your camera on a tripod when using slower shutter speeds, this will prevent camera shake that causes blurry images.  The following two examples demonstrate the effects of using a fast or slow shutter speed.  Now Go out and play!

Shutter Speed 1/1250s (notice how the Leslie and Ryan seem to be "frozen", look at their feet especially)

Shutter Speed: 1/20s (I asked April and Jason to be still but do you notice the movement of the train) I didn't have a tripod with me so I used the ground instead! *wink*

Cooking :: 101

Hey Gang,

Yesterday on my FB I mentioned that I was in the mood to cook and particularly in the mood for seafood jambalaya.  I found a recipe on the internet and started my journey.  You have to understand Lez is the cook in the family and I'm the official "Taster" and dishwasher! *lol*.  This time I thought I would throw my hat in the ring, the true test though was with the kids, I'm proud to say that Kennedy finished her bowl and Gabe ate most of it! *lol*.   This was a pretty significant event, one that needed recording.  I thought I would try my hand at food photography, its alot tougher than I imagined.  The good news is that the dished turned out great, the bad news is the photography didn't.  Maybe I have a future in the culinary arts? *wink*

Is it just me or does Franks make the best Hot Sauce!

Of course you cant forget the seafood!

Dont worry the cat is not part of the recipe! *LOL*  Bella had this look on her face that said "Both you and I know you dont belong here."

And the final product!

Me and my Leica :: Day Two

Hey Gang,

Just my second day out with my new Leica!  Im totally loving this little camera!  Its sad to say but as a professional photographer thats all I seem to be doing, professional work.  Im not shooting for myself as much as I used to.  This forced me to ask why?  I guess the answer was simple, I hated lugging around my huge Nikon SLR D3, its such a behemoth of a camera.  Carrying it around screamed "paparazzi" *LOL*.  Then a few friends of mine introduced me to a leica.  Dave and long time Leica wedding shooter even lent me his Leica M7 to test it out, it was so cool to shoot film again!  The first thing I noticed is how small it was, so compact and quite! The other great thing (depends on how you look at it) was its fully manual including focus perfect for the photographer that wants to get back to basics and not mess around with a hundred functions.  Its simply a black box that makes photos, well it doesnt really make the photos, you know what I mean!  Here are just a few pics that I took at my in-laws for Sunday Dinner.

I think every photographer has this photo somewhere in their collection! *lol*

Just a quick shot of our Godson Cristian, dont you just love the cheeks!

This was a moment I captured between my sister-in-law and Ava.  Ava wasn't really in the mood to finish her dinner! *lol*

Sabrina + Gustavo Married!!

Hey Gang,

I finally got around to touching up a few photos from Sabrina and Gustavo's wedding!  Like a mentioned Sabrina contacted me about 2 weeks before her wedding and Im so glad she did.  Sabrina and Gustavo wanted to have a reveal done at their wedding, have I ever said how much I love it when my couples see each other before the ceremony?  Well I do!  It gives our couples a private moment to express their emotions/feeling/love for each other, it totally rocks!   The reveal took place at Sabrina's childhood home, how cool is that!  While the ceremony and reception took place at the Super Rustic Elm herst Innlocated in Ingersoll.  I want to thank our uber cool couple for being so awesome, its so easy take photos of couples that simply enjoy having fun!  See you guys soon! *wink*

You can see the rest of the photos on my Facebook

Me and my Leica :: Day One

Hey Gang,

Happy Monday!  As some of you may recall I picked myself up a Leica a few weeks ago, well I finally got to go out and put some clicks on it.  I have to say this manual focusing is not as easy as it looks! *lol*  I know alot of you are wondering why did I get myself a pretty much fully manual camera?  I'll get into that in another post.  In the mean time here are some picks I grabbed at the mall yesterday.

Thursday Pick me up :: I love this age

Hey Gang,

I know for some of you its been a long week already and you still have Friday to go.  Here's a little pick me up Thursday to help you along the way.

I was preparing dinner last night when I noticed the kids sitting on the couch together laughing their heads off!  At that moment I really took it in and thought to myself how lucky Lez and I are to have such great kids.  I moment later the laughing stopped and all I could hear was "Kennedy get off me!"  "No you get off me!" *LOL*.  After I broke them up I asked them what was so funny? They showed me a video they were watching, and we all started laughing.

My Very First Album Design

Hey Gang,

I started receiving a ton of emails after my latest Facebook status letting everyone know that I just designed my first Bridal album.  Even better April & Jason totally love it!  Everyone started emailing me wondering what it looks like?  I have to say it took me a long time to do it but after receiving my couple's reaction it was well worth it!  Just as a note each image represents a double page spread.
